Take the First Step Program Curriculum Emerge & Beyond A program that promotes teaching, wisdom, and inspiration grounded in the Bible. Brings individuals together to study the Bible's words, based on the men of the bible. Using scripture to address hope for healing by looking at the stories of ordinary life: families and generations, work and commerce, agricultural and urban life, and the challenges and calling of life circumstances. Areas include informing, warning, inspiring, entertaining, questioning, and persuading. All of these deepen our understanding of our own fundamental human experiences. Purpose and Objectives Empowering individuals through education, knowledge, and wisdom to overcome barriers and address rehabilitative thinking and behaviors by studying the men of the bible. The bible is important and relevant for both men and women of all ages. Men face different challenges, and it is essential to have a profound understanding of the scriptures. It will help you better understand God’s general plan for your life as well as the special and unique role God has for you. Church of the Nazarene Our SoCal District recognizes that “Lost and Broken People Matter to God”; “Lost and Broken People Matter to Us!” We are all about reflecting Jesus’ compassion and embracing a life a Christ-like way of life. We are actively involved in missions both abroad and within our local communities, as well as in the prison setting. It’s our faith journey that leads us to action and meaningful service to those who desire to know the incredible message of life in Jesus Christ. Class Length The class will last for 18 weeks, during which we will study approximately 44 to 47 men from the Bible. There are a total of 98 men in the Bible you should know. We will cover these men in one year. Each session will focus on two to three men at a time, drawing from both the Old and New Testaments. The course is designed to accommodate new participants as space allows. These will be due at the start of each class the following week of the lesson. We will adhere to the institution's policy regarding missed classes. If you fail to submit the required study guides, it will be treated as a missed class. Accumulating three missed classes will result in your removal from the program. Please make sure that the sponsor is informed about the reason for your absence so that it can be determined whether it qualifies as an excusable absence. Grading Scale The grading scale for the class will take into account attendance, class participation, and weekly assignments. The total points available for the course are 300. Your final grade will be calculated by adding your total course points and comparing this total to the point range for the Pass or Fail scale. Completion Certificates Only participants who meet the program requirements will be awarded a Certificate of Completion celebrating their growth, faith, and commitment throughout the journey. It provides essential knowledge and skills for effective Christian leadership. After completing the Cornerstone Curriculum, you will have the tools to: Do poverty work that honors God and helps make the world a better place Minister the Word of God with accuracy and effectiveness Articulate and defend fundamental Christian truth Skillfully tend the flock of God, the Church Represent Christ as an ambassador of his Kingdom We believe that the training you receive through the Cornerstone Curriculum will equip you to be an ambassador who will glorify God by serving Christ and His Church. This curriculum provides high-quality biblical and leadership training in a concise and focused format. It is designed for individuals seeking meaningful spiritual growth without the extended time commitment of traditional seminary programs. The program includes 4 lessons per unit (20 total lessons): Redemptive Poverty Work Biblical Studies Theology and Ethics Christian Ministry Urban Mission Enroll in TUMI – Cornerstone Please submit the 2016 CDCR form to the CRM Office to be added to the waitlist. Forms should be available in every housing unit and library or make an appointment with your Correctional Counselor. The program is entitled "BSC TUMI-Cornerstone " and takes place on Saturdays in SAP 626 from 10:30-12:30. Second Chance Month April 1, 2026 Every April, Second Chance Month shines a light on the millions of Americans living with a criminal record and the barriers they face while rebuilding their lives. What began in 2017 as a national effort has grown into a powerful movement, bringing together communities, organizations, and leaders to restore dignity, create opportunities, and open doors to brighter futures. The History of Second Chance Month Every person has inherent dignity and untapped potential. Yet nearly 1 in 3 American adults lives with a criminal record and often face significant barriers to employment, housing, education, and stability. In 2017, Prison Fellowship launched Second Chance Month as a nationwide effort to raise awareness about these challenges and advocate for meaningful change. At the time, individuals with criminal records were facing nearly 44,000 legal barriers that limited their ability to fully reintegrate into society. That same year, the movement gained immediate national recognition when the United States Senate unanimously passed a resolution officially declaring April as Second Chance Month. What began as a single initiative quickly grew into a bipartisan movement focused on restoring opportunity and reducing stigma. Since its launch, Second Chance Month has continued to expand in reach and impact. Multiple U.S. presidents have issued official proclamations recognizing April as Second Chance Month, and more than 35 states have followed suit. Today, over 1,100 organizations, churches, and businesses participate annually by working together to unlock brighter futures for individuals and families across the country. Each year, communities nationwide take part in events and initiatives that promote awareness and action.
